YOU NEED A PLAN!

Being in the SEAL TEAMS taught me that if you want to do something and do it well, you need a plan of action. I learned the importance of having a plan and following that plan, it made the difference between accomplishing the mission or being caught by the "bad guys".

When I was trying to come up with a plan of action to get myself in shape for the 1998 season and my first Hawaii IronMan Triathlon, I spent a large amount of time trying to make cycling and running workouts fit handcy cling. The volume loads on cycling programs were too much for someone using only the upper body and the running ones where to short and not intense enough. Also I had to take into consideration that the aerobic system of someone using a smaller muscle group works somewhat differently than that of an able bodied cyclist or runner.

I decided that if I wanted to get in the best shape of my life I needed to come up with something different, easy to follow and specific for handcycling.

After long research, input from fitness professionals and good old fashion trial and error I was able to come up with a personalized system that allowed me to achieve a high level of fitness and performance.

1999 Hawaii IronMan Triathlon: 1st place and a new world record

1999 Midnight Sun Ultra Challenge, Alaska: 1st place and new course record

 1999 National Handcycling Criterium Championship, Athens, Georgia: 1st place

No two people are the same, neither should be their fitness programs. Athletes can't work out "all out" all year round. They must have a plan. A plan that will take in consideration: periodization, resistance training, stretches and cross-training. All, on a day to day schedule of workouts that are easy to follow, and easy to understand. You don't have to do any guess work to know what you need to do that day.
